I often spend my time with art in a process of reconstruction and observation. At the intersections of my background in art and psychology; I find myself through making. When I engage with materials over time, I open myself up to a relationship. Discovery naturally takes place in this co-convergence. I take an interest in the gestation, development, and labor of art as a form of natural subsistence and mutual transformation.

I consider materials with sustainability in mind to call on the many mentors and teachers who have shown me understanding and taught me how to conserve precious materials like wood, substrate, and heart as the basis of my work. I was trained in studio art with an emphasis in painting, but I embrace a wide range of materials that serve as additional channels to deepening self-knowledge and abundance.

In broad strokes; many of my “paintings” have all included some amount of oil paint, printmaking, watercolor, colored pencil, oil pastel, digital illustration, photography, graphite, organic matter, illusion, clay, or cyanotype. Through each of these mediums; the humility of Color inspires me most. I hold Color very dear to me. Color is the most alive and the most within reach. 

Painting generates meaning that words alone cannot. The language of grief, compromise, and liberation speak here. Trust and intuition are syntax; the body becomes the mouth. Art-making speaks truthfully of a divine union within the mundane. Ideas and feelings multiply, develop, and emerge; art is a commitment to witnessing the generation of life. Creating is an act of persistence and an embodiment of life’s great mysteries.

I persist with emotion. The blues. I don’t put to words the true essence of a color, but I ingest it in experience with painting. I make better sense of the current not by solving, but by being with it. Many ideas and feelings erode and change over time, so art is a reminder that present testimony is an essential part in remembering now.

Painting appreciates that we change and can become anything at a given moment.
